Who can join?

Am I eligible to join?

As a restricted membership health fund, you must meet eligibility criteria in order to join Teachers Health Fund.

Teachers Health Fund is not just for teachers. It is for the education community as a whole including support and administration staff, university lecturers and teachers aides. In addition to this, their families can join too.

Eligible in your own right Eligible through a family relationship
Teachers and Academics You are eligible to join Teachers Health Fund if you are or were a member or associate member of any of the following education unions:

Administration and support staff

If any of the following criteria describe you, then you are also eligible to join:

  • A current or former staff member employed by the NSW Department of Education and Communities, The Office of the NSW Board of Studies, the Institute of Teachers or in the TAFE Commission, who is (or was) a member of an appropriate union, where one exists.
  • A current or former employee of the NSW Teachers Federation or Teachers Mutual Bank (formerly known as Teachers Credit Union) who is (or was) a member of an appropriate union, where one exists.
  • Current and former school administration staff in NSW who are (or were) covered by the Public Service Association of NSW (PSA).

People who were members of Teachers Health Fund on 12 October 2007 are also eligible to join.

If you are related to someone in the list on the left, you can also join. This includes the following:

  • Spouse or partner
  • Former spouse or partner
  • Dependent children
  • Adult children (or their partner or dependent child)
  • Siblings (or their partner or dependent child)
  • Parents
  • Grandchildren

All Australian residents, who are entitled to Medicare, are able to claim an income tested rebate on their private health insurance; would you like to apply your rebate?

For individuals earning between $88,001 - $102,000 (or $176,001 - $204,000 for families*).
*For families with children, the thresholds are increased by $1,500 for each child after the first.

How rebate tiers workX

Most Australians with private health insurance currently receive a rebate from the Australian Government to help cover the cost of their premiums. The private health insurance rebate is income tested. The table below details the different rebate amounts and Medicare Levy Surcharge levels.

The rebate applies to hospital, general treatment and ambulance policies. It does not apply to overseas visitors cover. The rebate levels applicable for 1 July 2013 to 30 June 2014 are:
